Software Manager - Embedded Software

If your CEO said: “At the end of the day we’re all here to have fun, and if that means we sell some work at zero profit that’s fine. We aren’t driven by money”, would that appeal to you?

What if you also found out that by taking that approach their company grew from strength to strength over decades, constantly improving, adjusting and updating to the latest modern technologies, winning multiple awards along the way, and delivering one of the best employee environments you could hope for?

Foobar Recruitment are excited to be partnered with a high-growth company in the medical and consumer sectors. Year on year growth has been both strong and stable, with a broad client base that is well balanced across multiple niches. We are now working to expand their software team significantly. As such we are looking for 3 people who can operate at the highest levels of seniority, reporting into the directors, and creating the structure required to grow the teams below them.

The role itself could fall into two different categories of person (see requirements below), but it is broad and much more than just managing teams. You will also be working with the director on the strategies required to continue that growth. You will be working directly with clients, extracting requirements at the earliest stages, and taking those requirements through to the final delivery. You will be deciding on the tech stacks within the team, and leaning on modern tools and best practices where required.

Technically - We need someone who understands embedded software, the entire SDLC, how it all pieces together, how tools and methodologies help the process, why codes and standards are beneficial and on a more granular level an understanding of embedded systems and microcontrollers, and how the software works together with and complements electronics and even mechanical aspects of the engineering. You will almost certainly have come from a background in embedded software, and devices, although we are happy to take applications from people outside of this.

The future is also broad and bright! As the expansion continues, so will the software teams' involvement in other areas of the software world. With applications that work with the devices, across mobile, desktop, and web, through to standalone development projects that will complement the existing work, but not be directly linked to it. This is currently a small part of our client's work, but it is a medium to long-term growth area. You won't necessarily be required to grow in to this area yourself, but our client want at least some of the new hires at management level to be excited by this opportunity to broaden their own horizons.

The working arrangement:

  • Flexible working hours
  • Remote / hybrid / office-based. You choose. If you want to go to the office you'll like it, it's both modern and purpose built!

*If remote then please be aware that there will be occasional travel to clients, and you will need to get to Cambridge once a month*

The benefits:

  • Salary £80k - £110k commensurate with experience
  • An award-winning and commercially successful employer who cares as much about engineering as they do about profit
  • Bonuses up to 20%
  • 10% pension (non-contributory)
  • Training budgets that you are encouraged to use

... and much much more

Two types of people could be suitable:

The first would be excellent and managing teams, mentoring juniors and getting the most out of those teams

The second would be a highly commercial, client-facing person who can deliver projects

Both of those will need:

  • A strong understanding of the full SDLC
  • An understanding of how to make good code, and create teams that can deliver
  • At least some ability with the other type too (we can't take on a people manager who has no commercial savvy, for example!)
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary teams, and how to ensure your software teams work well with interconnected disciplines (such as electronics and mechanical).
  • An appreciation of modern tools and best practices, such as CI/CD etc.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • You will almost certainly have experience of embedded software. I'm happy to talk to people who don't have that too but have a desire to work in that area, but please be aware that you would need to be incredibly strong in every other aspect (including being both of the two types of person listed above!)

At Foobar Recruitment we love giving out referral bonuses. If you just read this and thought "yes, I know someone" then head to our website or LinkedIn and drop Sheridan an email.
