Data Scientist & Data Engineer - The Difference?

A Data Scientist is someone who analyses and interprets data. A Data Engineer is someone who builds the systems that collect, store, and process data.

Data Scientists are concerned with understanding data. They use their skills in statistics, computer science, and mathematics to analyse data sets and find trends. Data Engineers build the infrastructure that allows data scientists to do their work. They design and implement the systems that collect, store, process, and analyse data.

Data Scientists need to be able to effectively communicate their findings to those who do not have a background in data analysis. Data Engineers need to be able to effectively communicate their designs to those who do not have a background in computer science. Both roles require strong problem-solving skills.
