Senior Project Engineer
Our client owns and operates low carbon and renewable energy networks in Milton Keynes and Woking, supplying district heat, cooling and electricity to large commercial and public sector customers, and approximately 1500 residential units. The business is generating assets that include nearly 10 MW of gas fired CHP and over 1.8 MW of solar PV installations
The principal purpose of the Senior Project Engineer role is to lead the Engineering Projects including new customer connections to energy networks, the expansion of existing energy infrastructure and the addition of new assets and/or replacement of existing major assets. The Senior Projects Engineer role spans project inception through to hand over to O&M Engineering teams for adoption and operation.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Providing technical advice and expertise on opportunities to deliver the long-term environmental objectives of energy networks, with particular emphasis on developing the ‘roadmap’ for decarbonisation of energy supply
- Contributing to strategic planning for expansion of energy networks and assets through liaison with developers, planning officers, Highway’s authority staff and other key stakeholders critical to successful network expansion and connecting new customers
- Assisting project teams in the preparation of technical documents, cost plans, bids to secure external funding and to support company’s own investment plans
- Developing project briefs for individual projects
- Leading in the preparation of specifications
- Reviewing contractor proposals, drawings, and other technical documents
- Liaising with contractor’s project team throughout the process
- Site inspections and dealing with any issues
- Reviewing O&M manuals, ensuring H&S is always adhered to
- Planning, supervising and assisting the graduate engineers with personal development
- Reporting on project progress
- Co-ordinating with in-house energy networks Maintenance team
Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
- A strong understanding of hydraulic, mechanical, electrical and data systems used in district energy networks
- Experience in defining user requirements for mechanical equipment including commercial pumps, motors and valves
- Experience of working with PLC/SCADA systems
- Experience as client engineer in overseeing the commissioning of LTHW and chilled water generation and distribution systems
- Experience of managing project delivery processes and working within multi-disciplinary MEPH installation projects
- Relevant mechanical/electrical engineering qualifications to degree level (minimum)
- An understanding of PLC SCADA technologies and their application to controls and instrumentation for energy plant and networks
- A good understanding of existing and emerging technologies relating to low and zero carbon heat and power generation
- Knowledge and experience of district heat pipe design and installation, including inspection and site monitoring of DH pipes by specialist contractors
