How to make a great first impression in an interview

Do you have an interview coming up? If so, check out our tips on how you can create a great first impression.

Before your interview

Practise

Before your interview make sure you take the time to practise the most common interview questions. Think about how you would answer the questions to show the interviewer you have the right skills.

Research the company

Make sure you take the time to research the company before your interview. Not only will you be more prepared for any questions the hiring manager might ask you, but you will also get a sense of the company culture too.

Go through the job ad

Read the job ad again and write down how your skills match the job ad. Make sure you emphasise these skills in your job interview to show the hiring manager you are the right fit for the role.

Getting ready for the interview

Wear the appropriate attire

If you are not sure what to wear, ask the recruiter or hiring manager before your interview what you should wear. They will be able to point you in the right direction.

Eat well

Make sure you eat well before your interview, so you feel energised and ready for those tough questions.

Give yourself plenty of time

There is nothing worse than feeling flustered when you arrive at an interview. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. If you are early, you can take some time to relax and go through some of your answers again.

During the interview

Show your enthusiasm

It’s vital to show the hiring manager your enthusiasm for the role they have advertised. Make sure you can explain why you want the role and what excites you about it.

Use examples

Where you can, make sure you use examples to back up your experience. This will show the recruiter that you do have the ability to excel in the role.

Body language

Use positive body language such as eye contact to show your confidence to the hiring manager and to show them that you are listening to what they are saying.
