Engineering Manager

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Engineering Manager carries the overall responsibility for all engineering activities

In direct collaboration with other departments, this position is responsible for the proper execution of projects within the Engineering department, ensuring that the company meets its customer commitments within the approved budget for each project

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Leads and manages all facets of engineering functions:

o Oversees technical design concept and validation; building appropriate processes and tools to verify technical risks during Sales / Applications phase, through execution and the conductance of post mortem project reviews

o Schedules and manages execution of all Mechanical and Electrical Engineering project tasks; establishing an appropriate work breakdown structure and ensuring all engineering work is executed: Within agreed hours & costs, deadlines and within the agreed scope of work

o Establishes a culture of “frugal design” with emphasis in design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) and a constant focus on cost reduction

o Provides leadership and strategic direction for the standardization of designs.

o Defines expectations, assigns accountability, provides feedback, and provides mentoring, coaching, people development, and training as necessary.

• Acts as a liaison with Engineering departments across other sites to properly support a positive mindset through collaboration and knowledge sharing

• Keeps abreast of global R&D initiatives and integration into daily engineering operations

• Maintains a relentless pursuit of continuous improvements of people, product and process

• Works closely with the Project Managers to ensure the engineering scope for each project is properly defined; risks are clearly identified and with mitigating actions in place.

• Works actively with the HR department to implement talent acquisition, talent development and employee retention initiatives in line with the strategic goals of the company

o Ensures suitable skill sets exist within the Engineering group to successfully execute projects on a consistent basis.

o Creates a strategy for key personnel progression and retention

o Defines and leads the implementation of corporate goals, strategies, and action plans, as they relate to engineering operations

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• 10-15 years’ experience at mid-senior level management

• Formal training in business management or equivalent direct experience managing engineering teams over 15 people an asset

• Leadership training

• Formal technical training preferable in a field related to mechanical and/or electrical machinery

• Formal training in engineering management or equivalent work experience.

• Experienced in use of Autocad 3D

• Experience with an ERP system is desirable

• Above average command of office tools such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Office 365, Project 365

• A strong command of the English language.

o Document writing at a senior management level

o Comfortable speaking and making business presentations to mid-size audiences
