With the world changing since Covid-19 and remote opportunities becoming available we still need to build and form relationships with our employer and colleagues.
Here are some tips for a successful start and longevity.
Know Your Team
Understanding your role and the company structure is so important. You want to be able to know who the right person is to find the answers to your questions.
The lack of informal chat time to ask work colleagues and to get to know everyone will impede your knowledge of who is who and who to ask.
Understanding Your Computer Environment
Whether it be the CRM, Intranet, or project management software it is important to take the time to master these and understand the virtual environment of your new company. Learn as much as you can during induction and training and where to ask for self-help as it is harder to ask when no one is sitting next to you.
Optimise Your Training
When starting a job remotely ask if you can record the training session so you can look back later. Ask if there is any reference material on the intranet.
Show Initiative
Just like you would in a new office, make the effort to get to know your new team. For example, you can schedule a call of a few minutes with each one of your colleagues to introduce yourself and have a quick chat to get to know one another.
Create Informal Times
Lunches with colleagues and “outdoor smoke breaks” are classic informal times but you cannot do this remotely so how about organising a zoom lunch break or better still organise if possible, to come in one day for lunch.
If your company offers social activities take advantage of these and try to attend.
Get Organised
Starting a new job remotely can sometimes be distracting and less structured. Set a timetable and be physically present. The main thing is to quickly organise yourself as you would if you were in the office. Plan your day and week.
