IT Security Engineer - Worthing, West Sussex, 1 to 2 days per week in the office

Role Overview for the IT Security Engineer position:

A fantastic opportunity has opened for a IT Security Engineer to join a small, but highly effective group of security systems professionals. The Security Configuration Specialist/Security Operations Engineer will report directly to the Information Security Manager as part of the security operations capability.


  • Operations Security Controls.
  • Incident Response.
  • Firewall changes.
  • Security Engineer with Corporate/Business experience - must have commercial experience (not straight from education).
  • Some exposure to Windows/Linux/Unix, a bonus.
  • Any VMWare/Anti-virus/Intrusion Detection/Malware experience welcome.
  • Some form of Security Qualification/certification.
  • Lots of room to grow in this role, lots of new tech and transformation to get involved with if wanted - can get involved with Intelligence gathering/Threat Hunting/Capture Inside/Forensics etc

Duties for the IT Security Engineer position:

  • You will be required to configure, deploy and maintain all network security aspects and provide support to the wider security team and IT Operations on security related matters.
  • You must have experience of network security, IPS, DLP, Anti-bot and vulnerability management, gained across complex business structures, to include the deployment, administration and management of Firewall security blades.

Responsibilities for the IT Security Engineer position:

  • This is a demanding role; you must be able to manage complex situations and deliver a positive outcome, with a natural ability to communicate your insights, findings and solutions.
  • Respond to incidents and requests assigned to the SecOps team within SLAs.
  • Provide analysis and trending of log data.
  • Monitor, audit and report on compliance to IT security standards highlighting compliance breaches or potential risks.
  • Assist in the planning, management and execution of vulnerability and risk assessment projects.
  • Provide advice and practical assistance on information security risk and control throughout the organisation.
  • Promote security awareness to all staff.
  • Provide vulnerability management reporting ensuring patching policies and process are in place and that these are applied in a regular and controlled manner.
  • Research and track information about current security threats and potential vulnerabilities.
  • Participate in ongoing quality assurance activities during the development and implementation stages of the IT security initiatives.

Skills and Experience for the IT Security Engineer position:

  • Toolsets and skills - vulnerability and risk analysis, ability to use security tools.
  • Maintenance and management of security systems/devices.
  • CISSP certification or similar required.
  • Experience gained in at least one of these areas: Device and Server Security, Network Security (IPS, DLP, Anti-bot), Hardening, Integration Security, AV, SIEM.
  • Exposure and understanding of ISO27001/ISO27002 and GDPR desirable.
  • Previous experience gained from within a utilities company or other regulated businesses would be a distinct advantage.
